I wasn’t paying all that much attention to the television set when a commercial came on in which the background music was playing… What’s this?…  A Christmas Song??? Hey! Wait just a darn minute! It’s the middle of August for crying out loud!

I quickly looked up from my crossword puzzle to see if perhaps my ears were deceiving me. (Yes, I know, that sounds like an impossible statement, but you get the point.)  Two children were dragging themselves across the screen, eyes downcast, lips curling into a definite pout while, yes indeed, the background song was touting the happiness of the season.

I couldn’t help it, I smiled. The commercial in question was a “back-to-school” advertisement. The parents were fairly dancing in the streets in anticipation of their little darlings being away from home for 6 or 7 hours each day. Clever, I thought, very clever.

I can say that now. Now that I’ve retired from public school teaching. But for 30 years I would have been the one dragging my feet and trying to grab just one more day to play in the summer sun.

Funny how our perspectives change. Today, every season is the most wonderful time of the year. Every day I wake up on the green side of the grass is a cause for celebration. Each moment is to be cherished. Carpe diem!
