I admit it; I was daydreaming. The last place I wanted to be on that delightfully sunny afternoon was in a meeting listening to a woman drone on and on about things I felt had little or no relevance to my life.

But somehow, despite my best attempts to tune her out, a single phrase penetrated my consciousness: “Once you commit,” she said, “the universe conspires to assist.”

Now it’s not that I think this woman is beneath coming up with a jewel of a line like that herself, it’s just that I had an instantaneous gut-feeling she was “borrowing” (not to be confused with plagiarizing) a quote from someone else.

I googled the phrase when I got home, and I was right. It was the notoriously over-quoted Ralph Waldo Emerson who is credited with saying, “Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen.” Close enough.

So why did that particular line jump to my attention at this particular time?

Being a faithful practitioner of the Law of Attraction, I must attribute this to the unerring wisdom of the universe itself. In today’s vernacular, “We hear what we need to hear when we need to hear it.”

For weeks I had been struggling with a perceived inability to more forward, to get going again after completing a huge goal, to quit resting on my laurels and stop wallowing in my doubts and insecurities. In other words, I was stuck in a self-imposed mud. And it wasn’t pretty.

I have a friend who is fond of telling me, “Half measures avail us nothing.” So what about this word “commit”? I don’t think it’s possible to half-commit; you either do it or you don’t. To expand on the words of our friend Ralph, once we make a whole-hearted decision and fully commit to doing something, the universal mind, the divine spirit, the collective consciousness, our personal “higher powers,” or God, if you prefer, is ready, willing and able to jump right in and help us out.

I’ve seen the instant manifestation of abundance happen dozens of times as soon as one commits to all three steps of the simple process: Make up your mind, set your desired intention, and then “allow” the universe to provide. The funny thing is, the universe is just waiting for us to step up to the plate and take a good, solid swing at it.

So what am I waiting for? Or better yet, what are YOU waiting for?
