Call me old-fashioned, but I still believe our overpaid professional sports figures should be above reproach. They need to be a sampling of the best there is, on the field, and in the community. Our youth look up to these guys, and even if they aren’t winning, at the very least, they should exemplify high moral standards.

But apparently high moral standards are not required attributes in Seattle.

Before the first pitch of spring training, the Mariners have a third baseman arrested for allegedly making threats against a woman, and on January 27, the new second baseman got his butt thrown in the slammer for an alleged DUI in California.

Honestly! Is this the best Seattle can do? I think not. I think these arrogant asses need to be hit hard in the pocketbook. Maybe that will get their attention. Fine them plenty, and perhaps the message will get out: You wanna play here, you better toe the line.

I am saddened the bar is set so low. There are lots of aspiring baseball players on the farm teams who’d like a shot at the big time. Let’s give them all background checks before we let them take the major league field. No drugs, no alcohol, no rap sheet.

And that goes double for animal-abusing football felons no matter how well they can throw a ball.
