I’m easily entertained; I can make a game out of almost anything. So last week, when I was aimlessly driving around Hillsboro (no, I wasn’t lost, I was just taking the scenic route), I started counting the number of homes still sporting Christmas icicle lights.

Soon I added wreaths, swags and holiday flag categories to my tally. Apparently, not too many in Hillsboro know that you’re supposed to take down your Christmas decorations shortly after the epiphany on January 6th. (This is clearly outlined in the Holiday Decorating Etiquette Guidebook, page 42.)

Remember the song “The Twelve Days of Christmas”? The 12th day of Christmas is, you guessed it, January 6th. Today is February 13th, the… are you ready for this?…  the FIFTIETH day after Christmas. And still there many dozens of strings of icicle lights, wreaths, and other holiday decorations adorning the homes of Hillsboro.

I’m wondering if there’s some kind of contest going on that I’m not privy to. Or maybe these folks just want to get a jumpstart on Christmas, 2011. Or maybe… Maybe they just wanted to give me something silly to write about today.

As I said earlier, I’m easily entertained.
