I attended the monthly open board meeting of the Peninsula Players (see link in side bar) a couple days ago. When I suddenly became a “writer and director” for this group in July, I was given a year’s membership, so I thought I’d educate myself to find out what they are all about.
Two and a half hours later I found myself appointed to the board and given the title of “Publicity Coordinator.” How in the world did THAT happen?
Oh, I know very well how it happened. It happened just like most other things that land unexpectedly in my lap. When I ask questions, offer suggestions, and add to the general discussion, someone immediately assumes I know what I’m talking about and nominates me for something.
The thing is, I know I will do a fine job as their publicity gal. Unfortunately, it’s yet another claim on my time that doesn’t pay anything. As we all know, volunteering doesn’t cover the bills.
But maybe, just maybe, I’ll find a way to turn this kind of activity into something that does pay… It’s a long shot, but what the heck, it’s still a shot!
