The King Tut Exhibit is at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle until early January. It’s the last stop in North America, then leaves, allegedly forever. Whether that’s true or not, it’s a pretty safe bet I won’t be around to see it visit Seattle again.
The headset is narrated by Harrison Ford, and rotating in the Paccar iMax theater is “Secret of the Mummies,” and… wait for it… “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”
Unlike the first time it came to Washington (the state), in 1978, when 1.3 million visitors descended on Seattle Center, there were no long lines. Granted, I arrived at 10 a.m. on a Monday, but exiting the exhibit around 12:30, there were still no huge crowds waiting to get in.
Seeing it now, with 34 intervening years, gave me whole new insights in the history of the Middle East, and with civilization as a whole. I taught 7th graders about these ancient leaders, but I didn’t actual “get it” myself until seeing it first hand.
The same thing happened when I visited Lexington Green and Pearl Harbor. There’s something that just clicks when you set eyes on the places you’ve only read (or seen movies) about.
Go! Do! See it for yourself! And for kicks, check out Steve Martin on YouTube singing “King Tut”… guaranteed to get you improperly in the mood!
