I just returned from a whirlwind tour of Eastern Tennessee, Eastern Pennsylvania, and Southern New Jersey. In other words, I got to see a great deal of “fall foliage color” in a relatively short period of time.
A friend of mine was traveling for work, and I rode along, so to speak. It was my job to check out the interesting places to go and things to do as we stopped in each area and make recommendations on how we spent our “non-working” time together.
He calls me his Research Assistant, and it’s a job title I come by honestly. For starters, I read almost everything… brochures, billboards, motel amenities books, ads on the sides of busses, you name it. I learn more about each locality in just a few hours than many “locals” know after living there for years.
Being a life-long learner dramatically enhances my quality of living. Having the gift of gab doesn’t hurt either. It was Will Rogers who said, “A stranger is just a friend I haven’t met yet,” and that certainly applies to my outlook on being a “tourist.” Talking to “strangers” is how I glean the most interesting and valuable information.
