“Who me? Direct my own play? You’ve got to be kidding!” Those may not have been my exact words when first asked to step into the director’s shoes, but since there may be minors reading this blog, I’ve edited my statement accordingly…
When I wrote “Motorcycle Mama,” I had no intention of ever directing anything. Writers write, directors direct, and to confuse the two could only result in… In what? In chaos? In anarchy? In conflict between the writer and director? I mean, what’s the worst that could happen? On the other hand, what’s the best that could happen?
The best probably did happen when I was able to cast some of the most talented and amazing people I’ve ever met. They’ve guided me, nurtured me, held my hand, put ice on my war wounds, and have patiently taught me how to direct them.
If you’re in the area the last weekend in August, come on out and see the show! It’s one of four one-act plays being presented by the Peninsula Players in Ilwaco, Washington. (See sidebar for more information.) Please stop and say hello; I’ll be the woman in the front row alternately wringing her hands and biting her fingernails.
Community theater! What a hoot!
