I’m another step closer to one of my dreams today. Today the tickets went on sale for the two one-act plays I wrote last fall and which are being produced in Raymond at the Hannan Theater in March (see Willapa Players in sidebar).

For literally decades, I have wanted to write a play and see it produced on stage. I have wanted it, wished it, desired it, craved it, longed for it and dreamed of it, but until last fall, I never actually sat down and wrote it.

I guess it was the deadline that actually pushed me to do it. Like a lot of people I know, when you have too much time to do something (like the rest of your life), that something is easily set aside in favor of getting to those “immediate” concerns. When I was writing my newspaper column, I faithfully turned it in every other Wednesday for over 10 years. But when I don’t have a deadline, I lose the “accountability” factor and writing, all too often, takes a back seat.

So when the Willapa Players sponsored a Pacific County playwrighting contest, there was the perfect opportunity. Being the sometimes “cheerleader” for the Coastal Writers’ Critique (some might call me a nag), I encouraged all the group members to rise to the challenge. I wanted every one of them to submit something. But of course, if I’m going to talk the talk, I need to be willing to walk the walk.

Funny thing about dreams; it takes action to see them materialize. Go figure!
