Still think one person can’t make a difference? Don’t tell that to Wael Ghonim. His Twitter and Facebook activity in Egypt just one month ago today helped spark what the world is now calling the Egyptian Revolution. President Mubarak has stepped down, and true democracy, complete with honest-to-goodness elections, may well be on its way.
If the pen is mightier than the sword, then how mighty is the power of instantaneous messaging in today’s world? Just the thought of it takes my breath away.
Imagine, for just a moment, what Twitter might have meant for Martin Luther King, Jr. or Gandhi, or the Dalai Lama. And, to be fair, consider where we might be today if Adolf Hitler or Jefferson Davis had had unlimited texting?
With social networking there needs to be social responsibility. But as always, it is up to the masses to figure out which wagon is the one to hitch the horses to.
Wael Ghonim went where no man had gone before. And he used the force for good. In my book, he’s our first true 21st century hero, and I can’t wait to see the movie!
