I got to thinking about the origin of the word sweater as I hunkered into my comfy old rainbow knitted pullover this morning and sat down at my computer to work.

Sure enough, sweaters were wool wraps used to induce free perspiration. Horses, then athletes, and finally writers at work in August on the Washington coast, have utilized such “wraps” to warm themselves and keep their muscles from getting stiff.

A sweater in August is my contribution to going green. I’ve been playing a little game with myself, refusing to turn on the electric heat during the season we jokingly call “Summer.” Beginning June 21, I’ve opted for sweaters over kilowatts.

Since I pay the same amount on my PUD bill each month, so I’m also saving up for when I need not only heat, but lights, to live comfortably. This game works just fine when I’m here by myself, but I’ve noticed my summer company this year hasn’t stayed as long as they usually do.

Could be an additional benefit there!
