As you may have noticed in some of my previous blog posts, I like to go back to see what happened on this date in history. Today a couple interesting items mentioned linked up in my strange brain in a rather unusual way. Perhaps my brain does not fire on all synapses or something. Here are some examples of my twisted connections:
On this date in 1586, Sir Walter Raleigh brought the first tobacco to England from Virginia. And just 379 years later on this date, President Johnson signed a bill requiring cigarette makers to print health warnings on all packaging about the effects of smoking.
In 1909, Orville Wright tested the first U.S. Army airplane (flying 1 hour, 12 minutes), and in 1953, North Korea and the United Nations signed an armistice.
John Lennon is granted a green card for permanent residence in the U.S. just six years after Nabisco produced the pop tart.
And finally, Zsa Zsa Gabor began her 3-day jail sentence for slapping a cop today in 1990, and in 1940, Bugs Bunny debuted in “Wild Hare.”
I wonder what will be added to the list today, and what connection to the past my mind will leap to. It’s never dull inside my head.
